What a Reading Client Says About Our Dog Training
“We brought our dog Summit to Dog Coach after hearing several recommendations. Sarah exceeded our expectations. Summit is a different dog since working with Sarah. She created an environment where Summit could learn and grow both around other dogs and alone. Sarah embraced our entire family and encouraged my children when they attended the training. Sarah has made a huge difference in Summit’s life and our home life as well. She’s good for the soul!” – Emily R.

Reading Dog Training Tip: Say the Command Once
If someone doesn’t listen to us the first time, we repeat what we’ve said. That is logically sound. However, many of us do this in excess to our dogs and the reality is that if your dog doesn’t listen the first time, he’s probably not going to listen until the fifth time or if you start raising your voice. The tone of voice is important in training your dog and we’ve written about it over here.
When you’re raising your expectations for your dog, start noticing how many times you say a command before she listens. The biggest reason we repeat commands and hope our dog listens is that we have not established a way for us to enforce the command. So we just repeat, repeat repeat, hoping for something different.
- Have the leash on inside
- Say the command once and wait patiently
- Take a deep breath
- If your dog doesn’t comply with your command, use the leash to guide him to follow the command.
- Repeat the command in a calm, level voice as you guide him into the position
- Walk on and practice again with the next opportunity
It takes time to change both your habits and your dog’s behavior. Patience, repetition, and consistency are key to new, better behavior.
