Dog Training Tip: Potty Training

If you’re having issues getting your dog to go to the bathroom outside regularly, there are a few key tips. They are helpful regardless of your dog’s age or how long you’ve had the dog.

Schedule: to get your dog to go outside, establishing regular potty breaks is key. No matter their age, design a timetable for your household that works around work and school and assigns each family member a job in helping get the dog outside in time.
Leash: keeping the leash on while inside and in someone’s hand, is important to manage your dog or puppy inside. No free roaming, leash on, or in the crate. Managing your dog with a leash cuts down on accidents while not being watched.
Crate: full crate training your puppy or dog means accidents can be effectively controlled with a crate time schedule. Have your dog relieve themselves just prior to the assigned time in the crate. When crate time is done and you’re ready to take your dog outside for a bathroom break, leash the dog and go directly from the crate outside.
Consistency: head to the same spot outside each time. That spot is your dog’s potty spot!
Command: when your dog relieves himself on his own, mark it with “potty,” “pee,” or “do your business”
Praise: offer a praise reward for full, complete relief outdoors. This is the time to gush and love up your dog! You’re building a relationship with your dog and reinforcing good habits. Treats are not necessary and even discouraged.
